2/25/2025 0 Comments Countering Policy Exclusions: Canada, disability, and international commitmentsCheck out this Zoom Event - this week: Canada has signed and ratified key international agreements including on disability, Indigenous rights, race, the environment, economic and social rights and others. Reports from civil society organizations and researchers suggest that the implementation of these agreements is only partial, resulting in fewer supports and services for people with disabilities in Canada and abroad, and more people becoming disabled. This panel of civil society leaders and researchers will identify key implementation gaps and their implications for people with disabilities. They will also illustrate how women, girls and gender-diverse people with disabilities provide leadership to counter these failures. Panelists: Bonnie Brayton, Stephanie Chipeur, Lynn Gehl Date and Time: Thursday, February 27, 2025 - 12:30pm to 2:00pm Location: Virtual on Zoom - please note the time is in Eastern Time The Zoom link will be provided before the event to those registered. To register, email [email protected] with your name, email address, affiliation (if any), and any disability accommodations you require in order to participate fully in the event. This online event will provide a human captioner to provide live, accurate, real-time captions (CART captioning). Lynn is an author, advocate, artist, and public speaker. She is one of only two Algonquin in the world with a doctorate in Indigenous Studies. Her work encompasses both anti-colonial work and the celebration of Indigenous knowledge. She challenges Canada’s practices, policies, and laws of colonial genocide such as the Algonquin land claims, and in 2017 she was successful in Gehl v Canada regarding unknown and unstated paternity in the Indian Act. She is fascinated with Indigenous knowledge, in particular ancient modalities of symbolic literacy and she continues to learn about them.
